Opportunities

For over 65 years Barrett Day Care Center has utilized it's community resources to further the education and nurturing of its children and families. Volunteers as individuals and organizations have contributed numerous hours of labor, a tremendous array of services and an invaluable amount of materials and resources to the Center since it began in 1935. Barrett volunteers contribute an average of 2,000 hours per year to the Center.

If you would like to volunteer for the Center, please contact our Director, Donna Jenkins, or one of our Board Members. You may also fill out our Volnteer Registration Form and fax it to the Center.

Classroom Assistance. The Center has many volunteers that provide assistance to our teachers with classroom activities. This provides a great hands-ons experience teaching pre-school-aged children.

General Maintenance. Because the Center is housed in an old building, there is always a need for repairs and upkeep. Our Director and several board members have solicited volunteer labor from various contractors in Charlottesville, and many individuals have spearheaded renovation projects around the Center.

Clerical Assistance. As the only administrator at the Center, the Director has many responsibilites. Whenever a volunteer can assist with clerical work, the Director is free to concentrate on more important issues, such as the curriculum, marketing and fundraising.

Alumni Search and Development. The Center has had many alumni over its nearly seventy years in operation. Keeping track of our successful graduates is an enormous task in need of attention.

Building and Grounds Maintenance. Day care centers in Virginia must meet certain outdoor requirements. Barrett is no different. It has a large yard that needs regular landscaping as well as a large playground that must be maintained to remain safe for our students.

Board Membership. Our small Board of Directors is looking to expand its membership with enthusiastic community leaders that are interested in dedicating their services to the early education of local pre-schoolers.

Note. If you notice any errors on this page or would prefer to have your name removed from the volunteer list, please feel free to contact us.
